Recently, the World Research Institute released a report with updated data on global deforestation in 2022. The report underscores the urgency of addressing deforestation as a global issue. https://www.competere.eu/palm-oil-sector-as-a-zero-deforestation-role-model/
However, it is equally important to acknowledge the positive strides made by palm oil-producing countries, particularly those that export to Europe. Indonesia, Malaysia, Guatemala, and Colombia have achieved noteworthy accomplishments, which are outlined below:
Indonesia has seen a significant decline of 64% in primary forest loss since 2016.
Malaysia has experienced a 57% reduction in primary forest loss since 2014.
Guatemala has achieved all-time low deforestation rates in both 2021 and 2022.
Colombia has shown a consistent downward trend in forest loss since 2018.
These statistics highlight the ongoing commitment of palm oil producing countries to minimize deforestation.
It is crucial to share this information with the media to challenge the prevailing narrative that oil palm plantations are drivers of deforestation.
