Palm oil becomes costliest vegoil as Ukraine war halts sunoil supply - Reuters News
01-Mar-2022 03:41:15 PM
By Rajendra Jadhav

> Buyers struggle to replace sunoil quickly
> Huge demand lifts palm oil prices to a record high
> Soyoil supply limited as drought hits South America
> Palm's premium could fade as buyers shift to soyoil

MUMBAI, March 1 (Reuters) - Palm oil has become the costliest among the four major edible oils for the first time as buyers rush to secure replacements for sunflower oil shipments from the top exporting Black Sea region that were disrupted by Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

Palm oil's FCPOc3 record premium over rival oils could squeeze price-sensitive Asian and African consumers already reeling from spiralling fuel and food costs, and force them to curtail consumption and shift to rival soyoil BOc1, dealers said.

Crude palm oil (CPO) is being offered at about $1,925 a tonne, including cost, insurance and freight (CIF), in India for March shipments, compared with $1,865 for crude soybean oil.

Crude rapeseed oil was offered at around $1,900, while traders were not offering crude sunflower oil as ports are closed due to the Ukraine crisis.

The Black Sea accounts for 60% of world sunflower oil output and 76% of exports. Ports in Ukraine will remain closed until the invasion ends.

"Asian and European refiners have raised palm oil purchases for near-month shipments to replace sunoil. This buying has lifted palm oil to irrational price level," said a Mumbai-based dealer with a global trading firm.

"They have the option of buying soyoil as well. But prompt soyoil shipments are limited and they take much longer to land in Asia compared to palm oil," he said.

Soybean production in Argentina, Brazil and Paraguay is expected to fall because of dry weather.

Price-sensitive Asian buyers traditionally relied on palm oil because of low costs and quick shipping times, but now they are paying more than $50 per tonne premium over soyoil and sunoil, said a Kuala Lumpur-based edible oil dealer.

Palm oil's price premium is temporary, however, and could fade in the next few weeks as buyers shift to soyoil for April shipments, the dealer said.

Most of the incremental demand for palm oil is fulfilled by Malaysia, as Indonesia has put restriction on the exports, said an Indian refiner.

"Malaysian stocks are depleting fast because of the surge in demand. It is the biggest beneficiary of the current geopolitical situation," he said.

Plantation to get support from high CPO price
MPOC (RSS)

Analysts believe plantation sector counters could see an extended price rally supported by strong quarterly earnings

MALAYSIAN plantation companies will continue to benefit from the bullish commodities supercycle for another two quarters at least which should help sustain investors’ interest in the sector counters in the short term despite yesterday’s selling.

The benchmark FTSE Bursa Malaysia KLCI fell 20 points or 1.27% yesterday to 1,582 points while the Plantation Index fell 4.12% or 334.4 points while the Technology Index fell 3.7% on profit-taking by investors.

Despite the fall yesterday, analysts, on the whole, believe plantation sector counters could see an extended price rally supported by strong quarterly earnings as the sector benefits from bullish edible oil market fundamentals.

Malacca Securities Sdn Bhd head of research Loui Low said the strong crude palm oil (CPO) prices have boosted the earnings of plantation counters and attracted investor interest.

“We believe the plantation sector is set to continue its recent rally for at least up to one or two quarters going forward,” he told The Malaysian Reserve

While the environmental, social and governance (ESG) concerns persist among investors, Low said the strong earnings performances right now outweigh other concerns in the minds of most investors.

He expects 2022 will be a bumper earnings year for plantation companies and the relatively low valuation of the sector makes it attractive enough to narrow the discount ESG concerns had put on share prices earlier.

“For funds that are not carrying the ESG kind of mandate, they will be able to invest in plantation counters as CPO price is set to trade around the RM5,500 per tonne level for now,” he added.

For the past one month alone, Sime Darby Plantation Bhd’s share price rose 14.50%, while Kuala Lumpur Kepong Bhd (KLK) climbed 17.21%.

Sime Darby Plantation’s net profit more than tripled to RM468 million in the fourth quarter ended Dec 31, 2021 (4Q21), underpinned by both its upstream and downstream segments.

Quarterly revenue jumped 52.51% to RM5.55 billion from RM3.64 billion previously.

This resulted in higher earnings per share of 6.8 sen for Sime Darby Plantation in 4Q21 from 2.2 sen in 4Q20, the group’s Bursa Malaysia filing showed.

KLK’s net profit surged 67.69% to RM599.32 million in its recent quarter (1Q22), from RM357.41 million a year earlier, driven by sharply higher palm oil prices.

KLK’s quarterly revenue surged 58.82% to RM6.83 billion from RM4.3 billion in 1Q21 and earnings per share expanded to 55.6 sen from 33.1 sen, according to its Bursa Malaysia filing.

FGV Holdings Bhd share price has jumped 22.37% and IOI Corp Bhd gained 12.47% in a month.

Affin Hwang Investment Bank Bhd analyst Nadia Aquidah noted local institutional investors and foreign funds could have returned to Malaysia’s plantation stocks which would be good for the industry as it can provide some liquidity.

“We think there could potentially be pockets of opportunities in the short term during this high CPO price environment,” she noted in a report yesterday.

She added that most plantation stocks share prices had moved higher year-to-date and there could still be opportunities as more companies release their financial results this month.

Nadia expects CPO prices could remain elevated until the first half of 2022 and then soften as production of global vegetable oils picks up.

She stated CPO price had risen to a new high of between RM5,900 and RM6,000 per tonne last week due to the lingering tight supply, as well as an increase in related edible oils and crude oil prices.

“India’s move to cut tax on CPO imports coupled with the Indonesian government’s recent announcement to regulate palm oil expo...

India cuts tax on crude palm oil imports to help consumers, refiners - Reuters News

14-Feb-2022 02:21:37 AM
By Rajendra Jadhav

• Agriculture cess on CPO imports slashed to 5% from 7.5%
• Cut widens duty gap between CPO and refined palm oil
• India's CPO imports could rise, refined could go down

MUMBAI, Feb 13 (Reuters) - India has cut its tax on crude palm oil (CPO) imports to 5% from 7.5%, the government said in a notification, as the world's biggest edible oil importer tries to rein in local prices of the commodity and help domestic refiners and consumers.

The reduction in the tax, known as the Agriculture Infrastructure and Development Cess (AIDC), will widen the gap between the CPO and refined palm oil import duties, effectively making it cheaper for Indian refiners to import CPO, industry officials told Reuters.

The tax cut came into effect on Sunday.

"After the reduction in AIDC, the import tax difference between CPO and refined palm oil would widen to 8.25%," said B.V. Mehta, executive director of Mumbai-based Solvent Extractors' Association of India (SEA).

"This will help Indian refiners, but government needs to increase the difference further to 11% to encourage local refining."

In a separate notification, the government also said it would extend a reduction in a separate, basic customs duty on edible oils until Sept. 30. The tax reduction had been due to expire on March 31.

India imports more than two-thirds of its edible oil needs and has been struggling to contain a rally in local oil prices over the last few months.

The country imports palm oil mainly from top producers Indonesia and Malaysia, while other oils, such as soy and sunflower, come from Argentina, Brazil, Ukraine and Russia.

Refined palm oil imports accounted for nearly half of India's total palm oil imports in the past few months, said Sandeep Bajoria, chief executive of Sunvin Group, a vegetable oil brokerage and consultancy firm.

"The share of refined palm oil could come down to 20% with the revision in the tax structure," Bajoria said.

Indian refiners have been asking New Delhi to change the import duty structure as the overseas buying of refined palm oil was cheaper than CPO due to higher taxes imposed by producing countries on exports of CPO.

Mindful of an electorate that is highly sensitive to food price inflation, India's government in the past few months tried to rein in domestic prices by reducing import taxes, imposing stockpile limits and suspending futures trading in edible oils and oilseeds.

Moving towards expanding trade relations with the European Union, Ukraine continues to bring its own legislation in line with European norms. Will harmonization of Ukrainian legislation lead to an “accidental” ban on palm oil? Ukraine is located in  a strategic position in East Central Europe; lying on the northern shores of the Black Sea and […]

Mistry Sees Bullish Palm Oil Through May as La Nina Scorches Soy
By Anuradha Raghu
(Bloomberg) -- Palm oil prices may stay elevated over the next four months as La Nina ravages soybean crops in South America, reducing supplies of the tropical oil’s main rival, according to veteran trader and analyst Dorab Mistry.
“The new factor in the last two weeks is the deterioration in South American soybean crops due to the La Nina dry weather,” Mistry, director at Godrej International Ltd., said in an emailed response to questions. “This means the period of high prices is likely to be prolonged at least until May.”
The world’s most-consumed edible oil surged to an all-time high of 5,700 ringgit ($1,365) a ton in intraday trading on Monday in the wake of export restrictions from top producer Indonesia as well as persistent concerns that a chronic worker shortage in Malaysia will curb supplies through the first quarter. Mistry in December predicted that benchmark futures will trade from 5,000 ringgit to 5,400 ringgit through February before easing in March.

La Nina, which brings high temperatures and dry weather to South America, has damaged soy crops in key growing regions of southern Brazil and Argentina, with more drought likely ahead. The crop losses have taken the market by surprise as planting initially progressed smoothly and buyers including Chinese firms anticipated bumper crops. But now farmers are holding back grain and soybean sales on bets that prices will keep rising as the region’s harvest continues to shrink, exacerbating the supply squeeze in global edible oils.
Prices of palm, used in everything from cooking oil to soaps and biofuel, have nearly tripled from their early pandemic low, while Chicago soybean oil has climbed more than 150% in the same period, stoking fears of rising living costs for consumers. The United Nations’ index of global food prices jumped nearer to a record last month as vegetable oils and dairy became more expensive.
After May, the tropical oil’s direction will depend on the recovery in production, Mistry said. On the consumption side, the rally has already begun to dampen demand from key buyers. Cargo surveyor data from SGS Malaysia Sdn. showed exports from the No. 2 grower slumped 27% in January from a month earlier as shipments to India and China tumbled 34% and 26% respectively.
“We are seeing some demand destruction in the case of palm in price sensitive markets,” Mistry said. “That factor plus a recovery in production will eventually lead to lower prices.”

Introduction The Y-o-Y growth of soybean import in China has moved from positive to negative in 2021, as the Jan-Oct period import of soybean dropped by 4.9% against the positive growth of 8.7% recorded in 1H2021 (Tables 1 & 2).  This is a surprising development as it was widely anticipated that there will be a […]
