Palm Oil Prices Weaken Again in September; Further Decline Likely

Fitch Ratings-Singapore/Jakarta-27 September 2023: Fitch Ratings expects Malaysian benchmark crude palm oil (CPO) spot prices to weaken further over the next three to four quarters, after dropping again to below USD800 per tonne (t) in September 2023. Palm oil output has risen significantly this year, and we expect it to improve further before a potentially strong El Nino starts to affect output in late-2024. The global supply of other vegetable oils should also improve during this period.

Weather forecasters estimate a high likelihood of at least a “Strong” El Nino weather persisting until March 2024. Previous episodes of the weather pattern, which causes drier weather in Indonesia and Malaysia, have usually lasted for a year or more. Therefore, we see the risk of a strong El Nino persisting until at least end-2024.

Weather forecasts in the next few months should lend better visibility into 2H24 and beyond, and may brighten the CPO price outlook for 2024-2025. We currently assume USD600/t for 2024, and USD650/t thereafter

FUNDAMENTALS
Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 rose 0.35%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 increased 0.36%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 were down 0.21%.

Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.

The ringgit MYR=, palm's currency of trade, fell against the U.S. dollar, making palm oil more attractive for foreign currency holders.

Cargo surveyor Intertek Testing Services said exports of Malaysian palm oil products for Sept. 1-25 rose 17.5% to 1.1 million tons from 974,235 tons shipped during the same period in August.

According to independent inspection company AmSpec Agri Malaysia, exports of Malaysian palm oil products for Sept. 1-25 rose 15.2% to 1.09 million tons from 945,155 tons shipped during Aug. 1-25.

Official data showed the EU 2023/24 palm oil imports stood at 821,115 tons by Sept. 24, compared with 902,142 tons last year.

According to Refinitiv Commodities Research, a worsening drying trend will emerge in October for Indonesia, the biggest palm oil producer in the world.

Palm oil may test a support zone of 3,636 ringgit to 3,650 ringgit per metric ton, a break below could open the way towards 3,561 ringgit, according to Reuters' technical analyst Wang Tao.

MARKET NEWS
Oil prices ticked up in early trade, as markets focused on supply tightness heading into winter and a "soft landing" for the U.S. economy.

Asia stocks traded mixed and benchmark U.S. Treasury yields were near multi-year highs, as investors sour on both stocks and bonds amid worries about the impact of higher-for-longer interest rates.

VEGOILS-Palm tracks crude oil lower, strong export data limits losses

SINGAPORE, Sept 26 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures fell on Tuesday amid easing crude oil prices, although losses were limited by recovering rival oils and strong export data.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for December delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange fell 18 ringgit, or 0.5% to 3,698 ringgit ($789.50) a metric ton in morning trade.

FUNDAMENTALS
According to cargo surveyor Intertek Testing Services, exports of Malaysian palm oil products for Sept. 1-25 rose 17.5% to 1.1 million tons from 974,235 tons shipped during Aug. 1-25.

According to independent inspection company AmSpec Agri Malaysia, exports of Malaysian palm oil products rose 15.2% to 1.09 million tons from 945,155 tons shipped during August 1 - 25 during the same period.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that soybean harvests advanced more slowly last week than analysts had expected.

Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 rose 0.1%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 was up 0.1%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 climbed 0.3%.

Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.

Oil prices slipped in early trade amid concerns that fuel demand will be crimped by major central banks holding interest rates higher for longer, even with supply expected to be tight.

The Malaysian ringgit MYR=, palm's currency of trade, was flat against the dollar. A weaker ringgit makes palm oil more attractive for foreign currency holders.

According to Refinitiv Commodities Research, a worsening drying trend will emerge in October for Indonesia, the biggest palm oil producer in the world.

Palm oil is biased to rest a support zone of 3,636 ringgit to 3,650 ringgit per metric ton, a break below which could open the way towards 3,561 ringgit, said Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao.

MARKET NEWS

VEGOILS-Palm languishes near 3-month low amid weaker rival oils

SINGAPORE, Sept 22 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures languished near a three-month low on Friday and looked set to post their third straight weekly loss, as weakness in rival oils countered support from strong export.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for January delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange rose 7 ringgit, or 0.2% to 3,686 ringgit ($786.77) a metric ton in rangebound trade. It has declined 2.6% so far in the week.

FUNDAMENTALS

GRAINS-Wheat loses ground as Black Sea supplies outweigh demand

CANBERRA, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Chicago wheat prices fell on Thursday, as plentiful supplies from the Black Sea region outweighed signs of renewed demand from large importers.

Corn and soybeans also edged lower as the U.S. harvest ramped up, adding to supply and keeping a lid on prices.

FUNDAMENTALS
Most-active Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) wheat futures Wv1 were down 0.3% at $5.87 a bushel by 0117 GMT. CBOT corn Cv1 slipped 0.1% to $4.82 a bushel and soybeans Sv1 fell 0.3% to $13.16-1/2 a bushel.

Several wheat purchases were reported on Wednesday.
Egypt's state grains buyer booked 120,000 metric tons of Romanian wheat in an international purchase tender. Traders said the cargoes were priced at roughly $256 per ton FOB, excluding freight.

Algeria's state grains agency OAIC purchased around 600,000 metric tons of milling wheat in an international tender which closed on Tuesday, European traders said.

A group of South Korean flour mills bought an estimated 50,000 metric tons of milling wheat to be sourced from Australia in an international tender, European traders said.

Analysts polled by Reuters estimate that the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) on Thursday will report U.S. wheat export sales for the week ended Sept. 14 at 250,000 to 600,000 tons.

On the supply side, cheap Russian wheat is still flowing into the market, with traders noting numerous offers at $270 a ton FOB.

Russia's SovEcon agriculture consultancy lowered its wheat harvest forecast for 2023 to 91.6 million tons from 92.1 million, still a bumper crop.

The Russian agriculture ministry was quoted as saying Russia would be able to export 60 million tonnes of grains in the 2023/2024 season.

Ukraine's river and maritime agricultural exports meanwhile totalled 2.2 million metric tons in Sept. 1-19 and could reach a record 3 million tons for the whole month, brokers said.

Ukraine's trade representative said he believed compromise was possible in a trade dispute with some nearby countries that have banned Ukrainian grain imports.

Chicago wheat futures fell to a 33-month low of $5.70 a bushel last week due to a supply glut.

In soybeans, the U.S. Department of Agriculture confirmed sales of 120,000 tonnes of U.S. beans to unknown buyers for delivery in 2023/24.

However, competition from Brazil has dented demand for U.S. soy. Chinese data showed that soybean imports from Brazil rose 45% year-on-year in August.

Analysts estimate that the USDA will report U.S. soybean sales in the week ended Sept. 14 at 550,000 to 1,200,000 tons and corn sales in the week ended Sept. 14 at 550,000 to 1,100,000 tons.

Expectations that Brazil could see a smaller corn harvest in the coming year lifted corn prices from a 33-month low of $4.68 a bushel on Tuesday.

VEGOILS-Palm tracks rival edible oils lower, softer ringgit caps losses

SINGAPORE, Sept 21 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures fell on Thursday to hit their lowest level in more than a week, as weaker crude and rival edible oils outweighed support from strong exports and a softer ringgit.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for December delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange declined 1%, or 37 ringgit, to 3,683 ringgit ($785.62) per metric ton in morning trade, hitting its lowest level since Sept. 13.

FUNDAMENTALS
Exports of Malaysian palm oil products for Sept. 1-20 rose 2.4% from Aug. 1-20, cargo surveyor Intertek Testing Services said on Wednesday.

Independent inspection company AmSpec Agri Malaysia said exports during the same period rose 1.8%.

The Malaysian ringgit MYR=, palm's currency of trade, weakened 0.13% against the dollar, making the commodity more attractive for foreign currency holders.

Oil prices fell further as U.S. interest rate hike expectations offset the impact of drawdowns in U.S. crude stockpiles.

Weaker crude oil futures make palm a less attractive option for biodiesel feedstock.

Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 fell 2.3%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 was down 1%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 fell 0.7%.

Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.

Palm oil may revisit its Sept. 12 low of 3,667 ringgit per ton, as a bounce triggered by the support at 3,695 ringgit has been almost reversed, said Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao.

MARKET NEWS
Asian stocks followed Wall Street's lead, dipping across the board as investors interpreted the U.S. Federal Reserve's latest policy statements as signalling higher-for-longer interest rates.

VEGOILS-Palm rangebound as soft ringgit counters weak exports

SINGAPORE, Sept 20 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures traded in a tight range on Wednesday, as market participants weighed weak shipments from the world's second largest exporter and support from a weak ringgit.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for December delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange fell 11 ringgit, or 0.3%, to 3,738 ringgit ($796.68) per metric ton in morning trade.

FUNDAMENTALS
Malaysia, the world's second largest palm oil producer, maintained its October export tax for crude palm oil at 8% and lowered its reference price, a circular on the Malaysian Palm Oil Board website showed on Tuesday.

Exports of Malaysian palm oil products for Sept. 1-15 fell 11.8% from a month earlier to 580,893 metric tons, cargo surveyor Intertek Testing Services said on Tuesday.

Another cargo surveyor, Amspec Agri, had said on Friday Sept. 1-15 exports fell 9.3% from the month before.

Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 fell 0.6%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 was unchanged. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 climbed 0.2%.

Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.

The Malaysian ringgit MYR=, palm's currency of trade, was flat against the dollar after a six-day decline.

A weak ringgit makes palm oil more affordable for buyers holding foreign currency.

Palm oil may climb into a range of 3,795-3,820 ringgit per ton, due to an extension of a bounce from the Sept. 12 low of 3,667 ringgit, said Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao.

MARKET NEWS
Asian stocks struggled for headway while 10-year U.S. Treasury yields stood at 16-year highs as surging oil prices drive inflation and set the scene for the Federal Reserve to project interest rates staying higher for longer.

Oil prices rose, hovering near 10-month highs hit the previous day, as a bigger-than-expected draw in U.S. oil stockpiles and weak U.S. shale output reinforced fears of tight crude supply for the rest of 2023.

Palm Oil Reserves in Malaysia Seen Rising to Six-Month High
2023-09-05 05:34:37.180 GMT By Anuradha Raghu (Bloomberg)

Palm oil stockpiles in Malaysia likely ballooned to the highest level in six months at the end of August as production in the second-biggest grower advanced while exports weakened.

Inventories climbed about 10% from a month earlier to 1.90 million tons, according to the median of 12 estimates in a Bloomberg survey of analysts, traders and plantation executives. That would mean stockpiles have jumped about 27% from the low in April, and could signal headwinds for benchmark palm oil prices.

Crude palm oil production rose about 7.5% to 1.73 million tons, the highest since October 2022, the survey showed.

Exports, however, are estimated to have dropped 1.5% to 1.33 million tons, after surging 16% a month earlier.

Palm oil futures in Kuala Lumpur have struggled to stay above the 4,000 ringgit psychological mark on concerns that high prices will erode demand. Prices retreated for a second day on Tuesday, dropping 0.6% to 3,961 ringgit a ton by the midday break.

Investors are also keeping watch on the pace of production in Malaysia, which is expected to peak between September and October. While stockpiles could accumulate in coming months, they’re expected to be capped by slower-than-expected output growth and steady consumer demand before key festivals.

Moving forward, exports could see a marginal recovery, driven by seasonal demand from China for the Golden Week festival and India for Diwali that’s celebrated in November, according to Sathia Varqa, senior analyst at Fastmarkets Palm Oil Analytics. India and China are the top palm importers.

More from the survey:
* Stockpile estimates ranged from 1.77 million to 1.97 million tons, production forecasts from 1.69 million to 1.77 million tons
* Export estimates were from 1.29 million to 1.43 million tons
* Imports are seen little changed at around 100,000 tons compared with 103,837 tons in July
* Local consumption estimates were from 250,000 tons to 340,000 tons

B30 biodiesel mandate pencilled in for 2030 in Malaysia

The Malaysian government has launched the second phase of its National Energy Transition Roadmap (NETR). This was launched by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and the NETR includes the implementation of a B30 biodiesel blending mandate. This has a target date of 2030 for B30 biodiesel to be mandated “when POGO [palm oil vs low-sulphur gas oil] spreads are projected to be economically viable,” according to one of the key initiatives of the programme. B30 biodiesel rst came to light in February 2020 by then Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad at the launch of the 2020 National Automotive Policy (NAP), that stated B30 biodiesel was to be rolled out in Malaysia by 2025. In addition to B30 biodiesel implementation, the green mobility (heavy vehicles) energy transition lever also aims to introduce future powertrains for heavy vehicles, which is to track the advancement in technology for future fuel powertrains. The future fuel powertrains initiative also aims to “explore the utilisation of hydrogen for long-haul trucks and battery-electric vehicles (BEV) for short- to medium-haul trucks.”

Palm rises on supply concerns amid India festive demand

Palm oil futures ended higher on Wednesday, as warm weather threatened the supply of palm and rivaledible oils in Asia amid the high-demand festive season in India.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for November delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange rose 80ringgit, or 2.04%to 4,010 ringgit ($864.78) per metric ton, up for a second straight session.

The Dalian palm contract DCPcv1, meanwhile, climbed 0.4%.

Hot and dry weather in India has squeezed crop yields amid higher demand during the festive season, offsetting concerns from existing high port inventories, said Mitesh Saiya, trading manager at Mumbai-based firm Kantilal Laxmichand and Co.

Dalian’s most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 was up 0.1%, while its price on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 rose 0.7%.

Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.
