GRAINS-Wheat edges higher after survey shows lower Canadian crop

CANBERRA, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Chicago wheat prices inched higher on Wednesday, snapping a four-day run of declines, after a survey showed a sharp fall in Canadian production that could curb global supplies.

Soybean and corn prices stabilised after falling on Tuesday, when U.S. government data showed that hot and dry weather had not damaged U.S. crops as much as thought.

FUNDAMENTALS
The most active wheat contract on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) Wv1 was up 0.2% at $6.01-1/2 a bushel, as of 0116 GMT. Soybeans Sv1 were unchanged at $13.92-1/2 a bushel and corn Cv1 was up 0.2% at $4.87-1/2 a bushel.

Wheat production in Canada fell by 14.2% in 2023 compared to 2022, a Statistics Canada survey showed on Tuesday, due to lower-than-average precipitation and high temperatures.

However, Chicago wheat prices are down nearly 10% this month, with the market well supplied by cheap Russian grain.
Russia's Sovecon agriculture consultancy on Monday raised its forecast for this year's Russian harvest to 92.1 million metric tons from 87.1 million tons.

A Ukrainian official told Reuters that farmers were not expected to reduce the area of winter wheat they sow for the 2024 harvest despite higher logistics costs due to the war with Russia.

Data showed that soft wheat exports from the European Union in the 2023/24 season fell to 4.49 million metric tons by Aug. 27 from 6.31 million tons a year before.

In the soybean market, prices were supported by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) confirming private sales of 246,100 metric tons of U.S. soybeans and 105,000 metric tons of U.S. soybean meal for shipment to unknown destinations in the 2023/24 marketing year.

Soybean prices have risen around 4.5% this month as hot, dry weather in the United states damages crops at a crucial development phase.

Dry weather is expected to continue over the next few weeks but U.S. government data on Monday showed the damage to soybeans and corn was less severe than feared.

Soybeans are trading at their highest levels relative to corn since late 2016, which could lead to overproduction of U.S. soybeans in the coming years, moderating prices.

A Farm Futures magazine survey of U.S. planting intentions for 2024 found that growers expect to increase plantings of soybeans and wheat while reducing corn.

Brazil's soybean exports could reach 7.37 million metric tons in August, up from 5.05 million metric tons the same month a year ago, grain export group ANEC said.

Commodity funds were net sellers of Chicago Board of Trade wheat, soybean, corn, soymeal and soyoil on Tuesday, traders said.

MARKETS NEWS
Wall Street surged on Tuesday and Treasury yields dropped amid light, pre-holiday trading as a smattering of weak data had investors changing their expectations for U.S. monetary policy.

VEGOILS-Palm marginally higher on rival edible oil gains, weak ringgit

SINGAPORE, Aug 30 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures extended gains on Wednesday aided by the strength in rival edible oils and a softer ringgit.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for November delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange strengthened 9 ringgit, or 0.23%, to 3,939 ringgit ($849.84) per metric ton in early trade.

FUNDAMENTALS
Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 fell 0.1%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 climbed 0.6%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 rose 0.2%.

Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.

European Union soybean imports in the 2023/24 season had reached 2.16 million metric tons by Aug. 27, up 10% from 1.96 million tons a year earlier, data published by the European Commission showed on Tuesday.

India is poised for its lowest monsoon rains in eight years, with the El Niño weather pattern seen crimping September precipitation after an August that is on track to be the driest in more than a century, two weather department officials told Reuters on Monday.

The Malaysian ringgit MYR=, palm's currency of trade, firmed 0.17% against the dollar, but remained near an over one-month low. A weaker ringgit generally makes palm oil more attractive for foreign currency holders.

Palm oil FCPOc3 may break a resistance at 3,963 ringgit per metric ton, and rise into the 4,017-4,050 ringgit range, said Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao.

MARKET NEWS
Asian equities rose on Wednesday and the dollar wobbled as weak U.S. labour data bolstered bets that the Federal Reserve was likely done with its interest rate hikes, while beaten down China stocks rose for a third straight day.

Oil prices extended gains on Wednesday after industry data showed a large draw in crude inventories in the U.S., the world's biggest fuel consumer, and as concerns about a hurricane in the Gulf of Mexico kept investors on edge.

VEGOILS-Palm dips on weaker Malaysian exports, but rival oils cap losses

SINGAPORE, Aug 28 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures dipped on Monday following reports of lacklustre exports this month, although gains in competing edible oils limited the downward trend.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for November delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange dropped 6 ringgit, or 0.15%, to 3,956 ringgit ($850.75) per metric ton in early trade.

FUNDAMENTALS

Indonesia's palm oil exports, including refined products, in June stood at 3.45 million tons, while the stock by the end of June was at 3.69 million tons, data from the Indonesian Palm Oil Association showed.

Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 rose 1.4%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 also climbed 1.4%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 advanced 0.5%.

Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.

The Malaysian ringgit MYR=, palm's currency of trade, weakened 0.26% against the dollar. A weaker ringgit generally makes palm oil more attractive for foreign currency holders.

Palm oil FCPOc3 may break resistance at 4,000 ringgit per metric ton and rise into a 4,080-4,135 ringgit range, said Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao.

MARKET NEWS
Asian shares rallied on Monday as China announced new measures to support its ailing markets, though the mood was cautious ahead of readings on U.S. jobs and inflation that could decide whether interest rates have to rise again.

Oil prices ticked higher on Monday, along with equity markets, after China took steps to support its flagging economy, though investors remained worried about the pace of growth as well as further U.S. interest rate hikes that could dampen fuel demand.

SINGAPORE, Aug 22 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures fell on Tuesday following a dip in rival Dalian edible oils, although strong export data helped limit losses.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for November delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange slid 60 ringgit, or 1.52%, to 3,876 ringgit ($833.91) per metric ton in early trade, erasing gains from the prior session.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 16 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures jumped for a second straight session on Wednesday and hit a nine-day high after a surge in exports during the first half of August and as the ringgit weakened.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for November delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained 38 ringgit, or 1%, to 3,843 ringgit ($828.77) per metric ton during early trade, its highest since Aug. 7.

FUNDAMENTALS
Indonesia has set its crude palm oil (CPO) reference price lower at $820.35 per metric ton for Aug. 16-31, effectively keeping its CPO tax and levy unchanged, according to a trade ministry regulation.

Exports from Malaysia during Aug. 1-15 rose 18.9% from the same period in July, cargo surveyor Intertek Testing Services said on Tuesday.

VEGOILS-Palm set to post third weekly loss

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 11 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures fell for a third session on Friday, tracking weakness in rival vegetable oils on the Dalian Commodity Exchange, and are set to post a third weekly loss.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for October delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange lost 30 ringgit, or 0.80%, to 3,698 ringgit ($807.95) per metric ton in early trade.

FUNDAMENTALS
India's demand for palm oil has been increasing as its discount to soyoil and sunoil has grown and the surge in demand is expected to assist Indonesia and Malaysia in bringing down their palm oil inventories.

Malaysia's end-July palm oil inventories rose to a five-month peak on higher production, data from the country's palm oil board showed on Thursday, but missed expectations as exports grew at a faster pace.

Exports of Malaysian palm oil products for August 1-10 were seen rose between 5.9% and 17.5%, data from cargo surveyor Intertek Testing Services and independent inspection company AmSpec Agri Malaysia showed.

Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 lost 0.51%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 fell 0.99%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOc2 were up 0.05%.

Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.

MARKET NEWS

VEGOILS-Palm falls ahead of MPOB supply-demand report

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 10 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures fell on Thursday, surrendering gains from the previous session, as traders awaited key palm oil board and cargo surveyor data due later in the day.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for October delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange slid 40 ringgit, or 1.06%, to 3,731 ringgit ($816.05) per metric ton in early trade.

FUNDAMENTALS
The Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) is scheduled to release July supply and demand data later in the day. Cargo surveyors are also due to announce Aug. 1-10 export shipments data.

A Reuters survey estimated July inventories to rise 4.2% from the month before to a five-month high of 1.79 million tonnes as production climbed.

Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 gained 1.5%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 rose 0.7%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 were down 0.6%.

Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.

MARKET NEWS
Asian stocks lost ground, still hurting from China's slip into deflation, with investors particularly cautious ahead of a crucial U.S. inflation report that will likely influence the Federal Reserve's monetary policy path.

Oil prices fell in early Asian trade after reaching fresh highs in the previous session as concerns about the Chinese economy offset the positive impact of steep drawdowns in U.S. fuel stockpiles and Saudi and Russian output cuts.

Palm Oil Stockpiles in Malaysia Seen Surging to Five-Month High

By Anuradha Raghu
(Bloomberg) -- Palm oil inventories in Malaysia probably expanded to the largest in five months at the end of July as production in the world’s second-biggest grower rebounded, countering the impact of stronger exports.

Stockpiles rose about 4.1% from a month earlier to 1.79 million tons, according to the median of 13 estimates in a Bloomberg survey of analysts, traders and plantation executives.

That would be the third straight monthly increase.

Crude palm oil production jumped about 7.6% to a seven month high of 1.56 million tons, after dropping 4.6% in June, the survey showed. Exports climbed about 9.4% to 1.28 million tons, the biggest since March.

“The growth in stocks will be the most important thing to watch from here onwards,” said Nagaraj Meda, managing director of Hyderabad-based TransGraph Consulting.

Benchmark futures in Kuala Lumpur rallied above 4,000 ringgit a ton last month on worries that the worsening conflict in the Black Sea region will hurt exports of sunflower oil and channel demand to palm, but they have since retreated as attention shifts to rising supplies.

Prices have fallen 3.6% so far this week, even as the tropical oil rose 1% to 3,862 ringgit by the midday break on Friday.

Charts suggest that palm could drop toward 3,725 ringgit in the near term, according to Gnanasekar Thiagarajan, head of trading and hedging strategies at Kaleesuwari Intercontinental.

Palm Oil Resumes Declines as Other Edible Oil Prices Weaken

(Bloomberg) -- Palm oil resumed its decline, tracking weakness in other vegetable oil markets, although prices remain supported by the export outlook and a widening discount against substitute oils.

Futures in Kuala Lumpur fell 1% to 3,876 ringgit a ton at the midday break after a choppy session. They dropped for the seventh time in eight days as traders assessed rising supplies in producers Indonesia and Malaysia, the two biggest producers. Palm oil has been dragged lower by weakness in Chinese prices and a lack of positive news, according to Abdul Hameed, director of sales at Manzoor Trading in Lahore. Traders are also avoiding taking risky positions ahead of official supply data for July from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board, as well as US crop updates due next week, he said.

Still, optimism that robust export demand will continue this month is underpinning prices. Palm’s discount to soybean oil, its closest substitute, widened to around $480 a ton on Thursday, from about $265 in mid-May, making it more appealing for price-sensitive buyers.
“Market sentiment isn’t too bearish as high imports from India and China in the last two months indicate that palm oil demand is rising,” Hameed said. The wide spread between palm and soyoil is creating room for further purchases, while uncertainty over how the war in Ukraine will affect edible oil supplies is also supporting prices, he said.
