Palm oil producers see red despite record output
Profits have fallen an average of 79% across the board even as output rises to record high.
Yet, net profits for the big producers were down 78.9% across the board compared with Q1 2022 when production was just a breath lower at 3.8 million tonnes.
Oil palm is a seasonal crop and production usually peaks in the third quarter of the year and bottoms out in the first quarter. Hence comparisons are made quarter-on-quarter (q-o-q).
The big losers were Boustead Plantations Bhd, FGV Holdings Bhd and Sime Darby Plantation Bhd.

Malaysian palm oil futures declined for a third straight session on Thursday after a drop in soybean oil selling momentum, as well as a lower-than-expected U.S. biofuel mandate.

JAKARTA, June 22 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures fell for a third day on Thursday amid continued weakness in rival soyoil following lower-than-expected U.S. biofuel mandate.
The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for September delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange dropped 1.16% to 3,572 ringgit ($769.33) per metric ton in early trade, extending a 3.76% loss over the previous two sessions.
FUNDAMENTALS
The Biden administration on Wednesday increased the amount of biofuel that oil refiners must blend into the nation's fuel mix over the next three years, but the plan has angered the biofuel industry, which says mandates for corn-based ethanol and biodiesel are not high enough.
Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOc2 traded 1.28% lower. The Dalian Commodity was closed for Dragon Boat Festival holidays.
Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.

KUALA LUMPUR, June 19 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures eased on Monday after surging 6% in the previous session, although concerns over dry weather taking a toll on global production of palm and soybeans kept the contract near six-week highs.
The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for September delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange slid 9 ringgit, or 0.24%, to 3,734 ringgit ($808.75) per metric ton during early trade.
FUNDAMENTALS
Global oil prices fell on Monday, backing off last week's gains as questions over China's economy outweighed OPEC+ output cuts and the seventh straight drop in the number of oil and gas rigs operating in the United States.
Weaker crude oil futures make palm a less attractive option for biodiesel feedstock.
Chicago soybean futures extended gains on Friday to hit their highest in nearly six weeks, as signs of a worsening drought in the U.S. Midwest heightened crop concerns while oilseed crushing data suggested brisk demand.
Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 were closed for a public holiday. Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 rose 1.5%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 gained 2.1%.
Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.
Palm oil may retest a resistance at 3,791 ringgit per metric ton, driven by a powerful wave c, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said.

VEGOILS-Palm oil in range-bound trade, dry weather and weak demand weigh
KUALA LUMPUR, June 15 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures traded in a tight range on Thursday as traders weighed bigger May stockpiles against concerns over weak demand and dry weather hitting production.
The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for August delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained 5 ringgit, or 0.14%, to 3,457 ringgit ($746.49) a metric ton during early trade.
FUNDAMENTALS
Indonesia plans to set its crude palm oil reference price at $723.45 per metric ton for the June 16-30 period, down from $811.68 currently, economics ministry official Musdhalifah Machmud said on Wednesday.
Indonesia's palm oil exports, including refined products, fell 1.93% annually to 2.13 million metric ton in April, data from the Indonesian Palm Oil Association showed on Thursday.
India on Wednesday slashed base import duty on refined soyoil and sunflower oil to 12.5% from an earlier 17.5%, the government said in a notification as the world's biggest vegetable oil buyer tries to dampen local prices.
Cargo surveyors are scheduled to release June 1-15 shipment data later in the day.
Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 rose 0.1%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 gained 0.2%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 were down 0.07%.

VEGOILS-Palm oil slips as early June exports plunge
KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures fell on Monday, weighed by a slump in early June exports as investors awaited key palm oil board data due later in the day.
The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for August delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange slid 25 ringgit, or 0.74%, to 3,342 ringgit a metric ton during early trade.
FUNDAMENTALS
Exports of Malaysian palm oil products for June 1-10 fell 17.6% to 275,211 metric tons from 333,779 metric tons shipped during May 1-10, independent inspection company AmSpec Agri Malaysia said on Saturday.
Exports of Malaysian palm oil products for June 1-10 fell 16.7% to 295,990 metric tons from 355,380 metric tons shipped during May 1-10, cargo surveyor Intertek Testing Services said on Saturday.
The Malaysian Palm Oil Board is scheduled to release May supply and demand data later in the day.
Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 rose 1.1%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 gained 0.6%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 were down 1.1%.
Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.
Palm oil may retrace into a range of 3,308 ringgit to 3,341 ringgit per metric ton, as it failed to break a resistance at 3,394 ringgit, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said.

VEGOILS-Palm eases after two-day surge, weaker ringgit limits losses
KUALA LUMPUR, June 6 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures fell on Tuesday after two consecutive sessions of gains, with traders awaiting an industry survey on May inventories, while a softer ringgit lent some support to the market.
The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for August delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange slid 32 ringgit, or 0.95%, to 3,349 ringgit ($728.99) a tonne in early trade.
FUNDAMENTALS
The ringgit MYR=, palm's currency of trade, fell 0.42% against the dollar, making the commodity cheaper for holders of foreign currency.
The European Commission said on Monday it was extending until Sept. 15 an arrangement whereby five of Ukraine's EU neighbours can restrict imports of Ukrainian grain, including sunflower seeds.
Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 rose 0.3%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 gained 0.3%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 were down 0.1%.
Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.
Palm oil may break a resistance at 3,390 ringgit per tonne and rise into the 3,436-3,493 ringgit range, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said.
