VEGOILS-Palm oil touches near four-week high on China demand hopes

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures extended gains for a second session on Wednesday, hitting a near four-week high on hopes of a recovery in demand after China eased COVID-19 curbs.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for March delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained 18 ringgit, or 0.44%, to 4,118 ringgit ($928.50) a tonne during early trade, its highest since Dec 2.

FUNDAMENTALS
In a major step towards freer travel - cheered by global stock markets on Tuesday - China will stop requiring inbound travellers to go into quarantine from Jan. 8, the National Health Commission (NHC) said late on Monday.

Malaysian benchmark crude palm oil spot prices will average at $850 (3,770 ringgit) per tonne 2023, significantly lower than $1,175 in 2022, Fitch Ratings said in a report.

"The outlook for palm oil demand growth has been boosted by Indonesia's decision in December 2022 to increase the share of palm-oil based fuel in diesel. However, we expect supply to increase from 2Q23, and cause prices to drop in 2H," Fitch said.

The ringgit MYR=, palm's currency of trade, fell 0.34% against the dollar, making the edible cheaper for buyers holding other currencies.

Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 rose 1.2%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 gained 1.5%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 were up 0.3%.

Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.

MARKET NEWS
Asian equities were subdued, while the dollar held firm, with investors looking for direction after China took further steps towards reopening its COVID-battered economy.

VEGOILS-Palm oil slides, set for second weekly decline on weaker rival oils

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 23 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures slid on Friday in subdued trade ahead of a long weekend, setting it on course for a second weekly loss weighed by weaker rival Dalian edible oils.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for March delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange slumped 66 ringgit, or 1.69%, to 3,832 ringgit ($865.99) a tonne during early trade.

For the week, the contract has declined 2.25% so far.

FUNDAMENTALS
Indonesia's 2022 palm oil exports are estimated at 34.67 million tonnes, down from last year's 37.78 million tonnes, partly due to a temporary export stoppage in April, the chief executive of its palm oil fund (BPDPKS) said on Thursday.

The gradual easing of Indonesia's export restrictions would see shipments return to normal at around 36 million tonnes to 38 million tonnes in 2023, he said.

China's abrupt abandonment of its zero-COVID policy in the face of protests and a widening outbreak has left the world's most populous nation scrambling to avert a collapse of its public health system, and denting demand for commodities.

Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 fell 2.1%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 slipped 3%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 were up 0.5%.

Bursa Malaysia will be closed on Dec. 26 for Christmas holidays and will resume trading on Dec. 27.

Palm oil may test a support at 3,806 ringgit per tonne, with a good chance of breaking below this level and falling into 3,721-3,762 ringgit range, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said.

GRAINS-Soybeans up for 2nd session on Argentina weather, wheat firms

SINGAPORE, Dec 21 (Reuters) - Chicago soybean futures gained more ground on Wednesday, with lack of rains in Argentina underpinning the market, although slowing U.S. sales to China limited gains.

Wheat rose on concerns over crop damage in the United States.

FUNDAMENTALS
The most-active soybean contract on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) Sv1 rose 0.2% to $14.81 a bushel, as of 0118 GMT, wheat Wv1 added 0.4% to $7.53-1/2 a bushel and corn CV1 gained 0.2% to $6.53 a bushel.

Rains in parts of Argentina's corn and soybean growing areas over the weekend have boosted crop prospects, but the world's leading exporter of processed soy has been hit by a historic drought that has prevented many farmers from planting.

Brazil, the world's biggest soybean exporter, is far less impacted by dry conditions, and is expected to begin harvesting soybeans by late-January.

China's November soybean imports from the United States fell 6.9% from a year earlier, data showed on Tuesday, after low U.S. river levels slowed shipping of beans to ports for export.

The world's biggest soybean buyer, China, imported 3.38 million tonnes of the oilseed from the United States last month, down from 3.63 million tonnes a year earlier, according to the General Administration of Customs.

For wheat, temperatures in the United States dropping well below freezing could damage winter wheat crops in parts of the Great Plains that haven't received protective snowcover.

Ukraine's Danube river ports have boosted grains transshipments by 42 times to an all-time high of 6.1 million tonnes so far in 2022, Ukraine's seaport authority said on Tuesday.

Commodity funds were net buyers of CBOT soybeans, soyoil, corn, wheat and soymeal futures contracts on Tuesday, traders said.

VEGOILS-Palm oil tracks soyoil higher, flood woes offer support

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 21 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures rose on Wednesday, tracking overnight gains in rival soyoil, with concerns over flood-related supply disruptions in the world's second-largest producer also offering support.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for March delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained 75 ringgit, or 1.94%, to 3,944 ringgit ($889.29) a tonne during early trade.

FUNDAMENTALS
More than 70,000 people have been displaced this week as flooding worsens across several states in Malaysia, the world's second-largest palm oil producer, with heavy rains expected to persist until the year-end.

Exports from Malaysia during Dec 1-20 fell 4% from the previous month to 952,592 tonnes, cargo surveyor ITS said on Wednesday.

Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 fell 0.5% while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 eased 0.3%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 rose for a third day, after rising 2.2% overnight.

Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.

Oil prices rose as U.S. crude stocks were seen falling last week, making palm oil a more attractive option for biofuel feedstock.

Palm oil looks neutral in a range of 3,861-3,945 ringgit per tonne, and an escape could suggest a direction, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said.

VEGOILS-Palm oil gains as Malaysia floods fuel supply concerns

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 20 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures rose for a third session on Tuesday, lifted by stronger rival oils and crude prices as flooding across the world's second-largest producer fuelled concerns over production and possible supply disruption.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for March delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained 52 ringgit, or 1.32%, to 3,981 ringgit ($897.83) a tonne during early trade.

FUNDAMENTALS
Wet weather conditions in Malaysia will prevail through late-December, raising flooding risks and disrupting supplies in the near term, Refinitiv Agriculture Research said in a note late Monday.

Oil prices rose in early trade, shored up by a weaker dollar and a U.S. plan to restock its Strategic Petroleum Reserve, but gains were limited by uncertainty over the impact of rising COVID-19 cases in China.

Stronger crude futures make palm a more attractive option for biodiesel feedstock.

Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 rose 0.2%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 gained 1%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 were up 0.4%.

Palm oil is biased to test a resistance of 4,029 ringgit per tonne, as it climbed above a lower resistance at 3,945 ringgit, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said.

Asian share markets were trading mostly in negative territory on Tuesday, as investors anticipated a somewhat rocky road for China's unwinding of COVID restrictions and the prospect that U.S interest rates will rise higher than expected in 2023.

Malaysia's end-Nov palm oil stocks seen down slightly as output falls

KUALA LUMPUR — Malaysia’s palm oil inventories at end-November likely shrank slightly from October as output slowed while imports jumped, a Reuters survey showed on Monday.

Exports are expected to climb 3% to 1.55 million tonnes, while imports likely rose 16.8%.

Strong demand for palm oil has been underpinned by a widening price discount against rival oils including soyoil.

The ringgit looks set to rise with a new government in place in Malaysia.

The Malaysian Palm Oil Board is scheduled to release its data on Dec. 13.

Breakdown of November estimates (in tonnes):

Production 1,632,200-1,759183 1,722,912

Exports 1,353,400-159,4006 1,549,446

Imports 50,000-117,500 77,500

Closing stocks 2,316,631-2,512,100 2,392,337

* Official stocks of 2,403,719 tonnes in October plus the above estimated output and imports yield a total November supply of 4,204,131 tonnes. Based on the median of exports and closing stocks estimate, Malaysia’s domestic consumption in November is estimated to be 262,348 tonnes.

Stockpiles in the world’s second-largest producer were seen falling 0.47% from the previous month to 2.39 million tonnes, according to the median estimate of six traders and analysts polled by Reuters.

Production is pegged to decline 5% from October to 1.72 million tonnes.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for February delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange dropped 1.56% to 3,905 ringgit ($892.57) a tonne in early trade, after ending up 0.38% on Monday.

FUNDAMENTALS
Dalian's palm oil contract DCPv1 fell 2.37%, while its most active soyoil contract DBYv1 was trading sideway. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOc2 gained 0.85%.

Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils, as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.

Malaysia's palm oil inventories at end-November likely shrank slightly from October as output slowed while imports jumped, a Reuters survey showed on Monday.

The European Union is attempting to clinch a deal on a law to prevent companies from selling into the EU market soy, beef, coffee and other commodities linked to deforestation around the world.

Palm oil is poised to break a trendline and revisit its Nov. 21 low of 3,787 ringgit a tonne, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said.

MARKET NEWS
Global stocks and Treasury prices fell on Monday, as new evidence of a strong U.S. economy raised fears that interest rates will stay higher for longer, eclipsing China's easing of pandemic restrictions.

Oil prices edged higher, after a G7 price cap on Russian seaborne oil came into force on Monday on top of a European Union embargo on imports of Russian crude by sea.

VEGOILS-Palm rebounds on boost from stronger rival oils

JAKARTA, Dec 5 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures rebounded on Monday after posting a weekly decline of more than 4%, as a recovery in rival oils in the United States and China buoyed prices.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for February delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange rose 3.21% to 4,079 ringgit ($934.26) a tonne in early trade, rebounding from a two-week low on Friday.

FUNDAMENTALS
Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOc2 gained 1.44%, after losing 10.80% over the four previous sessions. Dalian's most active soyoil contract DBYv1 rose 0.82%, while its palm oil contract DCPv1 gained 0.36%.

Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.

The ringgit MYR= strengthened against the U.S. dollar for a fourth day, hitting its best level in seven months on Monday. A stronger ringgit makes palm oil less attractive for holders of foreign currencies.

Palm oil may drop further into a range of 3,837-3,891 ringgit a tonne, probably after a moderate bounce to 4,029 ringgit, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said.

MARKET NEWS
Asian shares extended their rally as investors hoped steps to unwind pandemic restrictions in China would eventually brighten the outlook for global growth and commodity demand, nudging the dollar down against the yuan.

GRAINS-Wheat falls 1%, set for 4th weekly drop on Black Sea supplies

SINGAPORE, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Chicago wheat futures extended losses on Friday, with the market set for a fourth weekly decline, pressured by ample Black Sea supplies that are giving stiff competition to U.S. exporters.

Soybeans inched up after last session's deep losses, while corn fell.

FUNDAMENTALS
The most-active wheat contract on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) Wv1 slid 0.9% to $7.75-3/4 a bushel, as of 0152 GMT, soybeans Sv1 added 0.2% to $14.33-1/4 a bushel and corn Cv1 gave up 0.1% to $6.59-3/4 a bushel.

For the week, wheat is down almost 3%, corn has dropped nearly 2% and soybeans are little changed.

A record wheat production in Russia, the world's biggest exporter and ample supplies elsewhere from the Black Sea region are adding pressure on U.S. futures.

The U.S. Agriculture Department (USDA) said export sales of wheat totalled 162,500 tonnes in the week ended Nov. 24, well below the low end of analysts' forecasts that ranged from 300,000 to 725,000 tonnes.

The USDA reported weekly corn export sales of 632,700. The market had expected 475,000 to 1.1 million tonnes.

The soybean market dropped on Thursday after the U.S. government proposed smaller-than-expected biofuels blending requirements.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency proposed smaller increases than traders expected in the amount of ethanol and other biofuels that oil refiners must blend into their fuel over the next three years.

Production of renewable diesel, which can be made from soyoil, is growing, "but not at the unrealistic pace expected by fund managers," StoneX chief commodities economist Arlan Suderman said.

Soybeans and wider commodity markets had been underpinned in recent sessions by signs China was softening its tone on COVID-19 rules after rare public protests in the world's second-largest economy.

Argentina's wheat production outlook is likely to face more cuts due to lower-than-expected yields, the Buenos Aires grains exchange said on Thursday, as the harvest of the grains advances in the midst of a prolonged drought.

Commodity funds were net buyers of CBOT soymeal futures contracts on Thursday and net sellers of soybean, soyoil, corn and wheat futures, traders said.

MARKET NEWS
Asian shares were flat and Treasuries held onto gains on Friday ahead of the U.S. non-farm payrolls data, the next big test for investors looking for more signs of a shift from the Federal Reserve, while the dollar nursed heavy losses.

VEGOILS-Palm falls on weak rival oils, strong ringgit; set for weekly loss

JAKARTA, Dec 2 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures dropped for a second day on Friday as continued strength in the ringgit and lower related vegetable oils weighed, with the benchmark contract being on track for a weekly decline.

The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for February delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange fell 1.67% to 4,010 ringgit ($913.44) a tonne in early trade.

For the week so far, it is down 3.16%.

FUNDAMENTALS
Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOc2 were down 0.76% on Friday, extending losses after a day earlier it posted its biggest drop in a day since July. Dalian's most active soyoil contract DBYv1 fell 2.53%, while its palm oil contract DCPv1 slumped by 3.49%.

Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.

The ringgit MYR= strengthened for a third day against the U.S. dollar, hitting its best level since early June. A stronger ringgit makes palm oil less attractive for holders of foreign currencies.

Meanwhile, sunflower oil's discount to rival soyoil has widened this week to the highest level in more than 9 months as leading exporters Ukraine and Russia aggressively offered the oil to bring down their stocks, industry officials told Reuters.

Malaysian palm oil exports in November rose between 1.7% and 5.6% from the month before, according to data from cargo surveyors Intertek Testing Services, Amspec Agri and Societe Generale de Surveillance.

MARKET NEWS
Oil prices edged lower in early Asian trade as the U.S. dollar pared some losses, while easing COVID-19 curbs in two Chinese cities limited losses.

Asian shares were flat and Treasuries held onto gains ahead of the U.S. non-farm payrolls data, the next big test for investors looking for more signs of a shift from the Federal Reserve, while the dollar nursed heavy losses.
