VEGOILS-Palm oil touches near four-week high on China demand hopes
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 28 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures extended gains for a second session on Wednesday, hitting a near four-week high on hopes of a recovery in demand after China eased COVID-19 curbs.
The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for March delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange gained 18 ringgit, or 0.44%, to 4,118 ringgit ($928.50) a tonne during early trade, its highest since Dec 2.
FUNDAMENTALS
In a major step towards freer travel - cheered by global stock markets on Tuesday - China will stop requiring inbound travellers to go into quarantine from Jan. 8, the National Health Commission (NHC) said late on Monday.
Malaysian benchmark crude palm oil spot prices will average at $850 (3,770 ringgit) per tonne 2023, significantly lower than $1,175 in 2022, Fitch Ratings said in a report.
"The outlook for palm oil demand growth has been boosted by Indonesia's decision in December 2022 to increase the share of palm-oil based fuel in diesel. However, we expect supply to increase from 2Q23, and cause prices to drop in 2H," Fitch said.
The ringgit MYR=, palm's currency of trade, fell 0.34% against the dollar, making the edible cheaper for buyers holding other currencies.
Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 rose 1.2%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 gained 1.5%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 were up 0.3%.
Palm oil is affected by price movements in related oils as they compete for a share in the global vegetable oils market.
MARKET NEWS
Asian equities were subdued, while the dollar held firm, with investors looking for direction after China took further steps towards reopening its COVID-battered economy.

VEGOILS-Palm oil slides, set for second weekly decline on weaker rival oils
KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 23 (Reuters) - Malaysian palm oil futures slid on Friday in subdued trade ahead of a long weekend, setting it on course for a second weekly loss weighed by weaker rival Dalian edible oils.
The benchmark palm oil contract FCPOc3 for March delivery on the Bursa Malaysia Derivatives Exchange slumped 66 ringgit, or 1.69%, to 3,832 ringgit ($865.99) a tonne during early trade.
For the week, the contract has declined 2.25% so far.
FUNDAMENTALS
Indonesia's 2022 palm oil exports are estimated at 34.67 million tonnes, down from last year's 37.78 million tonnes, partly due to a temporary export stoppage in April, the chief executive of its palm oil fund (BPDPKS) said on Thursday.
The gradual easing of Indonesia's export restrictions would see shipments return to normal at around 36 million tonnes to 38 million tonnes in 2023, he said.
China's abrupt abandonment of its zero-COVID policy in the face of protests and a widening outbreak has left the world's most populous nation scrambling to avert a collapse of its public health system, and denting demand for commodities.
Dalian's most-active soyoil contract DBYcv1 fell 2.1%, while its palm oil contract DCPcv1 slipped 3%. Soyoil prices on the Chicago Board of Trade BOcv1 were up 0.5%.
Bursa Malaysia will be closed on Dec. 26 for Christmas holidays and will resume trading on Dec. 27.
Palm oil may test a support at 3,806 ringgit per tonne, with a good chance of breaking below this level and falling into 3,721-3,762 ringgit range, Reuters technical analyst Wang Tao said.
MARKET NEWS
U.S. stocks tanked and the dollar eked out a small gain on Thursday as solid economic data fueled worries that the Federal Reserve's monetary policy will hover at restrictive levels for longer than many market participants may have hoped.

Australia: Biofuels Annual
Ethanol consumption in Australia is forecast to remain stable in 2022 at only 1.1 percent of the gasoline pool, and biodiesel is forecast to increase moderately from very low levels but remain at less than 0.1 percent of the total diesel pool. Australia has very large feedstock (grains and molasses) supplies for bioethanol as well as robust supplies of feedstock (canola, tallow and used cooked oil) for biodiesel production. However, only a very small amount of these are used for domestic biofuels production. There is no federal government subsidy, tax credit or mandate supporting the production or use of biofuels. Only two states have biofuel programs with ethanol and biodiesel mandates, but these mandates are far from being reached

GRAINS-Soybeans up for 2nd session on Argentina weather, wheat firms
SINGAPORE, Dec 21 (Reuters) - Chicago soybean futures gained more ground on Wednesday, with lack of rains in Argentina underpinning the market, although slowing U.S. sales to China limited gains.
Wheat rose on concerns over crop damage in the United States.
FUNDAMENTALS
The most-active soybean contract on the Chicago Board of Trade (CBOT) Sv1 rose 0.2% to $14.81 a bushel, as of 0118 GMT, wheat Wv1 added 0.4% to $7.53-1/2 a bushel and corn CV1 gained 0.2% to $6.53 a bushel.
Rains in parts of Argentina's corn and soybean growing areas over the weekend have boosted crop prospects, but the world's leading exporter of processed soy has been hit by a historic drought that has prevented many farmers from planting.
Brazil, the world's biggest soybean exporter, is far less impacted by dry conditions, and is expected to begin harvesting soybeans by late-January.
China's November soybean imports from the United States fell 6.9% from a year earlier, data showed on Tuesday, after low U.S. river levels slowed shipping of beans to ports for export.
The world's biggest soybean buyer, China, imported 3.38 million tonnes of the oilseed from the United States last month, down from 3.63 million tonnes a year earlier, according to the General Administration of Customs.
For wheat, temperatures in the United States dropping well below freezing could damage winter wheat crops in parts of the Great Plains that haven't received protective snowcover.
Ukraine's Danube river ports have boosted grains transshipments by 42 times to an all-time high of 6.1 million tonnes so far in 2022, Ukraine's seaport authority said on Tuesday.
Commodity funds were net buyers of CBOT soybeans, soyoil, corn, wheat and soymeal futures contracts on Tuesday, traders said.
MARKET NEWS
U.S. stocks closed higher on Tuesday in a modest reversal of a four-day sell-off, but the greenback lost altitude and bond yields jumped in the wake of an unexpected policy pivot from the Bank of Japan (BOJ).
